Stocking

Dear Runner,

If you live outside Lakeland, I apologize in advance for talking so much about the need for restrooms at Lake Hollingsworth.  But this is it.  Read on for the final word on all the local candidates' positions on this most constitutional of issues!  And remember, election day is next Tuesday, November 3rd!

Yours in Fitness and in Health!

The No.1 & No. 2 Issue Stocking
Restrooms at Lake Hollingsworth
Lake Hollingsworth Park is used by over 2,000 walkers and runners everyday.  It is the crown jewel of Lakeland's Parks and Recreation department.  And for decades it has existed without restroom facilities.  The absence of restrooms causes many users to drink less water before and during exercise (an obvious health risk in Florida) and causes distress, anxiety and frustration for users when the need to go does arrive.

For context, the reasons usually given in opposition to implementing restrooms at Lake Hollingsworth are fears that they will aesthetically detract from the environment and attract crime and transients to the neighborhood--each a valid concern, but addressable.

Next Tuesday, November 3rd, Lakeland residents vote for a new mayor and city commission.  Vote if you can (all residents vote for each seat).  But first read on to hear the candidates' official stances regarding this most pressing constitutional issue--
The construction of bathrooms at Lake Hollingsworth!

Mayoral Candidates
Jim Verplanck--"The City of Lakeland is one of the finest cities in the state of Florida and we certainly can find a way to provide restrooms at this heavily utilized area while at the same time protecting the safety of our citizens."
Gow Fields--"It is my belief that a thoughtful solution does exist. We will have to make sure that whatever the possibilities we look at together include the input and concerns of those that live around the lake...I also understand that there are a number of thoughts and ideas on this issue as well as those who are opposed to it. I do believe though that we can achieve a win-win working together."
Elliot Dorsch--Did not respond to request for written position, but verbally stated he is in favor of constructing restrooms.

NW Commissioner
Ricky Shirah--"If elected I would put this issue at the top of my priority list. This is not only a safety concern but a long needed update for our prized Lake Hollingsworth. I agree that this is a vital community issue, and if given the opportunity, I will do whatever it takes to get this issue resolved."
Clarence Grier, Sr.--"I share your concern and agree that establishing rest rooms would be a benefit to those who frequent this wonderful recreational area.  My wife and I walk around the lake and have been personally frustrated with the deficit of rest rooms."
Phillip Walker--"As a city commissioner, I would not be opposed to having a restroom facility in a specified area along Lake Hollingsworth provided challenges which have been shared can be limited."

Southwest Commissioner
Don Selvage--I support building a restroom on Lake Hollingsworth.  I do believe, however, we must adequately address the concerns of location, maintenance, and safety in solving this challenge.  In that regard, the City of Lakeland's Parks and Recreation Department as well as residents must be part of the process.
Michael Dunn--No written response.

At Large Seat 1
Howard Wiggs--"I've spoken to Bill Tinsley [Director of Lakeland Parks and Recreation] about this and I believe that we can figure a way to make this happen. Some years ago, I was contacted about the need for a pet fountain. Then, too, I spoke to Bill and we were able to install it. I will continue to support this effort and hopefully we can allay the concerns of those who are opposed."
Rusty Boedicker--No written response.

Southeast Commissioner
Edith L. "Edie:" Yates--No written response yet, but this seat's election is being moved to a different date to allow inclusion of new candidates, due to the dropping out of James Goetz.
